I believe Henry David Thoreau was onto something when he wrote the words “Simplify, simplify, simplify!” in Walden. Tucked away in his little cabin, in the woods of Walden Pond, Thoreau wrote the words “Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify, simplify! I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumb-nail.” Maybe Throeau knew even then, written over 150 years ago, that we would need to be reminded of these words, and almost daily! Our culture has evolved at such a high-speed pace, most days it’s enough of a task just to try and keep up! Are any of you readers like me? Do you long to get back to simpler times? To reorganize your life, your many belongings, the things that have just accumulated overtime? Thoreau moved to Walden Pond to learn how to live deliberately, to simplify his life. I love this idea! In what way can we learn to live deliberately? For some, this means moving closer to family and what’s important, downsizing their home and belongings, meeting new people and making new friends, and for others it remains just an idea, and that’s okay!
